Introduction To Pragmatics : A Course Book For Beginners
The book starts with a discussion of how pragmatics has come to be a sub-study of linguistics and then anchors on language in use, which basically focuses on the analysis of meaning, particularly aiming at introducing the students with the notion of meaning and its complexities. Speaker meaning is particularly in focus as it is generally perceived as the domain where pragmatics most significantly belongs. The role of context is given much attention owing to its significance in the production and interpretation of language in use. The whole context in which such actions are performed is to be accounted for. In relation to this, readers are introduced with speech act theory, which has admittedly become an important conceptual feeder to pragmatic analysis. The verbal actions performed by using language through the expression of utterances are referred to as speech acts. In-depth understanding of speech acts is very necessary for the students with regards to their exploration of language as behavior and language in use.
